Hillend Loch is an attractive and mature reservoir established between 1797 and 1799. Airdrie & District Angling Club have managed the loch since 1949 although we have records of our club under the name of Airdrie Angling Club, fishing the loch as far back as 1859.
The loch was originally constructed to supply water to the Monkland and the Forth & Clyde canals, and is fed by six feeder streams that collect water from a large catchment area of the surrounding hills and moorland.
Originally stocked with brown trout only, Hillend Loch was renowned as being one of the best brown trout fishing waters in Scotland. It is some 365 acres and sits 650 feet above sea level.
In 1997 rainbow trout were introduced, the stocking of rainbows has continued on a weekly basis ever since. Brown trout are still stocked annually and with the natural fish hatching from the feeder streams, there are still high levels of Browns being caught especially mid to late season.
BANK FISHING
There is approximately 5 miles of scenic bank fishing available at the loch with good wading in most areas. Fly-Fishing, Bait Fishing and Spinning is allowed.
BOAT FISHING
There are eight boats available for hire to Fly Rod Anglers only on Hillend. These are hired on a 'without engine' basis. However, with prior notice an engine can be supplied at an additional cost.
There are many drifts on the loch with the most popular being, Spiers Island to Shiels Burn, Spiers Island to The Mound, Woodside to Boathouse Bay, Big Moss to Eastercroft Bay, and The Cliffs to Braco Burn. No anchoring is allowed so a drogue is advisable. Three people are allowed on each boat with only two fishing. Life Jackets are compulsory and are supplied.
Most lures will catch trout at Hillend in the early season with Black Fritz and Black Tadpole being the favoured patterns. Dry lines are recommended, as the loch is only an average depth of 7 feet. In June and July the Great Red Sedge appears on the loch and becomes a major source of food for the trout, therefore all Sedge patterns i.e. Deer Hair Sedge, G&H Sedge and Muddlers do very well.
HILLEND FISHING LODGE is located off the A89 Old Glasgow to Edinburgh Road on the Southeast corner of the loch. Facilities include car parking for visitors and the disabled. Toilets and washrooms and a small tea bar which serves teas, coffees, soft drinks and snacks.
A selection of lures, flies and baits are available from reception where day tickets and season tickets are available throughout the season.
There is a comfortable lounge area and balcony giving beautiful views over the loch where anglers can relax after a hard days fishing.
DISABLED ANGLING - Along the south shore of the loch runs a tarmacadam walkway which provides access for wheelchairs from the Disabled Car Park to a large area of the lochside and the custom built Fishing Stages.
A Wheelyboat is also available for wheelchair users. Seven days notice must be given and the boat is supplied with an engine and Boatman. This is booked on a 4-hour basis.
